It has been a fairly quiet month for members of Toodyay Friends of the River.
The Seed Group held a successful native plant sale on May 31 at the community shade house within the Shire depot grounds. The plants are propagated by the seed group from seeds collected within the catchment hence are really suitable for planting in this area. Members are likely to have success with growing these plants as the stock is reliable and copes in our demanding conditions.
A second working bee was held on June 8 to continue the woody weed control in the Boyagerring Brook area. Or rather it was scheduled to be held, but unfortunately no volunteers turned up. The ever-reliable Bethan Lloyd was left on her own to do what she could. This was such a shame so close to World Environment Day.
We can only hope that there will be better attendance at the next working bee, scheduled for 9.00am Sunday July 13.
Not only is this important to be able to continue the work TFOR does to enhance and protect the river, but also it coincides with one of our required General Meetings. So, members and prospective members, please put it in your diary now. More information will be sent to members closer to the event.
On a more positive note, TFOR, particularly Bethan Lloyd and Greg Warburton, continues to support the fantastic work being done by teacher Mark Donnelly and his Landcare class at TDHS.
This initiative commenced last year and is continuing with a new group of students. In addition to the students learning about environmental care and the immediate environment of the river, they contribute in a practical way. They have already been involved with some weed control.
The engagement of the next generation in appreciation of and caring for our river is so important and the Landcare class is an essential part of this. Congratulations to Mark and his students, ably supported by Bethan and Greg.
After this article is written but before it is published the Friends of the River will hold a farewell morning tea for our erstwhile President Jenny White before she and John head East.
