A farewell over morning tea

By Hugh Rayner

Last month, Toodyay Friends of the River held a very convivial morning tea to farewell former president Jenny White and to acknowledge the significant contribution she and John made to TFOR over their years of membership.

The morning tea was well attended, with everyone bringing a plate to share resulting in a sumptuous repast.

The highlight of the food was the amazing cake made by Naina Staff complete with a farewell message piped in the icing.

Current Vice-President and acting President Robyn Taylor spoke of Jenny’s significant achievements as President and the contribution she and John have made to the work of Friends of the River and the environment more generally.

Robyn then presented Jenny with a collection of gifts from Uniquely Toodyay to take east with her. She also presented Jenny and John with a booklet compilation of photographs of their involvement with a range of activities in Toodyay over the years. Particularly memorable were amusing images of the Recycled Regatta.

Those present wrote messages in the back of the booklet so it is a real keepsake. A copy of the booklet is available at Drummond House if you wish to have a look some Saturday morning.

Unfortunately, the July working bee had to be cancelled due to the lack of members available and willing to attend. However, the important maintenance work around the river has continued. Slashing of weeds around the plantings at Pelham Outlet has been organised in preparation for further planting later in the season.

Bethan Lloyd has also been going out regularly to continue the battle against the woody weeds. Further activity on this front is being arranged for the coming weeks. We hope to be able to resume working bees over the next few months. There is much to do to maintain the health and appeal of the river for all of us to enjoy.

As I write this, steady rain is falling. Hopefully, the river will finally achieve its magnificent winter flow. This will give the walk trails along the bank a real lift and provide beautiful views.
