Boyagerring Brook

Boyagerring Brook is a small sub-catchment in the Shire of Toodyay, entering the Avon River in the town of Toodyay. Its headwaters are in the east of the Shire commencing on farmland in the Nunile area.

Catchment Group
A Catchment Group was formed in 2003, with an aim to identify remnant vegetation within the catchment.
The east side of the Toodyay Shire has approximately seven percent of its native vegetation remaining and the group aimed to assist and encourage larger landholders to protect remnant vegetation, include revegetation along creek-lines and perennials as part of their farm plans.
One site was surveyed by WWF and the group helped plant buffer zones during 2004. Monitoring points were set up along the Brook to measure salinity, Ph, sediment and phosphate levels.
The Catchment Group received an Envirofund Grant in May 2004 for tree-line ripping, weed spraying, a solar water pump, electric fencing and signage; the group is no longer functioning.
Projects
Toodyay Friends of the River (TFOR) have been involved with a number of projects along the Brook as part of their annual work programme. These include:
- revegetation, Lot 1 Drummond Street – two sites, and the riverbank from Drummond Street culvert to confluence with Avon River in partnership with TDHS and Wheatbelt NRM
- installation of three Bat boxes (Wheatbelt NRM);
- eradication of Lovegrass infestation and follow-up revegetation (ongoing);
- installation of a rock riffle/crossing across the Brook in June 2007;
- in the development of Riverhills Estate, offset revegetation undertaken by the developer included about three hectares of reserve area upstream of Drummond Street crossing.
- riparian planting with school students recruited to plant around the confluence was disastrous; resulting plastic tree guards took TFOR three years to eradicate;
- installation of large culverts across Boyagerring Brook requiring major earthworks;
- sealing and fencing along the Murray Walkway for emergency access and walk path;
- construction of concrete and rock crossing with a single small diameter culvert ;
- Green Corps 2009 Tamarisk control;
- earthworks for fire mitigation, Lot 1 Drummond Street with revegetation by TFOR;
- installation of a picnic table near old traffic bridge ruins; installation of Wheatbelt NRM and Noongar Kaartdijin Aboriginal Corporation signage;
- increasing use of the area by walkers and Parkrunners; and
- the use of Boyagerring Brook area for school Landcare education programs (current)
Over the years Boyagerring Brook has been subject to significant flooding.
